As we welcome the new year, our Executive Director, Stefanie Lang, joined Radio France Internationale (RFI) to discuss how Legacy Landscapes Fund (LLF) is transforming conservation finance. In a wide-ranging conversation, Stefanie explained the challenges in protecting biodiversity hotspots and how LLF addresses critical funding gaps.

One key point Stefanie emphasized was LLF’s unique focus on covering the long-term, day-to-day operational costs of protected landscapes. These essential expenses—often overlooked in traditional conservation funding—are vital for the continued preservation of the planet’s most precious ecosystems. By ensuring reliable, ongoing financial support, LLF helps sustain the efforts needed to protect biodiversity for generations to come.

When asked how LLF selects projects for funding, Stefanie outlined the rigorous criteria in place. “We award grants to experienced, trusted conservation NGOs that manage significant landscapes,” she explained. To qualify, these landscapes must span at least 200,000 square kilometers of contiguous area and demonstrate strong management practices.

Stefanie also shared LLF’s commitment to social and environmental safeguards. “Active involvement of Indigenous Peoples and local communities is a non-negotiable aspect of our funding approach,” she said, highlighting the importance of respecting human rights and ensuring local voices are heard. Transparent and culturally appropriate grievance mechanisms are a mandatory requirement for all funded projects.
