The Tambrauw Mountains stand as a beacon of biodiversity as well as of cultural diversity. Boasting two Key Biodiversity Areas, two global ecoregions, and two Endemic Bird Areas, this vast forest stretches from sea level to a staggering 3,000 meters, creating a natural haven for species evolution and adaptation. Here, in one of Southeast Asia’s largest primary forest blocks, thrives a diverse Australasian fauna – many endemic and threatened.

LLF’s sustaining grant of one million USD per year for 15 years will contribute to preserving important species populations and ensuring that crucial ecosystem services like climate regulation and water retention can endure.

Program in brief

Activities

Facilitate the nomination, designation, zonation, and management planning of a Biosphere Reserve in the landscape through support to the Directorate General for the Conservation of Natural Resources and Environment (KSDAE) and the National Man and Biosphere (MAB) Committee, and facilitate the establishment of a multi-stakeholder management institution.
Support the West Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) in improving the management effectiveness of the North and South Tambrauw Nature Reserves (proposed core zones of the Biosphere Reserve).
Assist the West Papua BBKSDA in its efforts to stabilize or increase the population of key species by conducting surveys, aiding with the recruitment, equipment, and training of community-based patrols, as well as running a conservation education program.
Establish community-managed forest zoning, institutions, and management plans to support local communities' access to sustainable use of natural resources that respects government regulations and improves well-being in and around the landscape.
